Fishing (angling) in Snæfellsnes Peninsula
For many Icelanders, fishing has been a part of their lives since childhood. It is considered to be both family sport and grown up sport, depending on location or situation. People mostly fish for three species; Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), Brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Fishing for salmon in rivers is more expensive than fishing for char or trout in lakes. Fishing in lakes is also easier in many ways, and therefore more of a family sport than fishing in rivers. Sea angling is also quite popular in Iceland. Fishing permits have to be purchased in advance.
