Birdwatching in Snæfellsnes Peninsula

The interest in birdwatching has been growing in Iceland over the last few years. Around 75 bird species are listed as regular breeding birds but the total number of species that have been recorded is over 300. The diversity might not be huge compared to other countries, but in some places it is possible to see many species in a small area. Snæfellsnes Peninsula is one of the most suitable areas for birdwatching. Along with the diverse landscape comes diverse species of birds.

Breiðafjörður Bay is a large, shallow bay which separates Snæfellsnes Peninsula and the Westfjords. It is known for its islands, islets and skerries which are considered to be around 3.000, and the habitat of many bird species. Seatours Company in Stykkishólmur village offers different types of ferry trips in the Bay.

In the western part of Snæfellsnes Peninsula you will find steep bird-cliffs and rocky beaches. Remember to be careful at bird-cliffs. Please try not to upset the birds with noises or quick movements. The southern part of the Peninsula has many ponds, lakes and streams so there you will find more wetland birds than in the northern part.
